Fit And Fun: 3 Alternatives To Treadmills And Weights

Posted on

Many people find exercising incredibly tedious. The monotonous jog on a treadmill, and the boring grunt work of lifting weights can be mind numbingly boring. Unfortunately this turns many people off exercising and they get out of shape. However, there are some really fun alternatives to hitting the classic gym equipment. So, if you want to be fit, and you are looking for a fun alternative, then here are three ideas to consider.

Kickboxing Class

If you're a big fan of action movies, and love the exciting fight scenes, then you should consider taking a kickboxing class. These classes are great for both men and women. You see this when you watch a movie; be it Gina Carano or Jennifer Garner, or Donnie Yen and Jason Statham, the training is great for both men and women. It will get you into shape and also show you some cool self defense moves.

You don't have to worry about getting into the ring and getting bloodied up, there are plenty of no-contact kickboxing classes out there. Most classes involve pad work. Just make sure that when you are looking for a class, it's more geared towards cardio and technique, and not a class designed for people looking for full-contact sparing competition prep work.

Rock Climbing Classes

If you are not a big fighter, but prefer the great outdoors, then you should consider a rock climbing class. The best way to do this is to find a local indoor rock climbing center and take one of their classes. Then, you can join a group that actually heads out to parks and does real rock face climbs. Rock climbing is a super workout, especially for your upper body. It requires a ton of arm and upper back work, so if you are looking to tone up and get stronger, but find free weights and machines very boring, then rock climbing is perfect.

Dance Classes

If you're looking for something a bit more artistic, but also want a strong workout, then you need to consider dance classes. These are super fun; you're dancing, after all. But they also provide you with a great cardio workout. There are a few different types of dance classes to choose from. You can pick out a ballet class that is designed for beginners. Ballet looks beautiful, but it is also a tremendous workout. If you have ever seen footage of someone like Irina Dvorovenko, or Baryshnikov, doing their warmups, you will see how exhausting the routines can be. It's not uncommon for ballet dancers to be soaked with sweat after a class.

If you're more into modern dance, then something such as a hip-hop class, or a salsa class, might be more to your likening. These classes are great for people who want to actually use their dance techniques out in the world. While ballet is beautiful, you don't often get a chance to use it when you're out. Salsa and hip-hop, on the other hand, are not only awesome workouts, but you can use what you've learned the next time you go to the club.
